What is a receipt?

A receipt is proof that a payment was made. Unlike an invoice, which requests payment, a receipt confirms that money has already been received. Businesses issue receipts so customers have a record for their own bookkeeping, expense claims, warranties, or tax purposes. A clear receipt records who paid, how much, when, and by what method.

Receipt vs. invoice: what's the difference?

An invoice is sent before payment and shows the amount due and a due date. A receipt is issued after payment and shows the amount paid and the payment date. Many businesses send an invoice first, then a receipt once the customer pays. If you need to request payment instead, use the free invoice generator; if you need to record a payment you already received, this receipt maker is the right tool.

How to make a receipt

Add your business and the customer's details, enter what was paid for, set the amount paid and the payment date, and choose the payment method (cash, card, bank transfer, or check). If the payment relates to an earlier invoice, include that invoice number for easy reference. Then download a clean PDF receipt. No signup and no watermark.
